Ski Joring in Leadville, COLeadville city officials are staging snow and strawbales close to downtown in preparation for the town’s preeminent sporting event, Ski Joring. Drawing spectators from hundreds of miles away, this could be called the iconic sport for the winter west. Blending person, horse, skis and snow into fifteen seconds of flying snow, pounding hooves, and massive jumps taken at 30 miles an hour gets a crowd cheering like nothing else will. I could go on to try and capture this visceral event with words, but I still think it’d fall short. The best way to experience this unique sport is live on the sidelines. Head out to Leadville, CO this coming weekend, March 1-2 to see what all the fuss is about for yourself. A close second comes from the photos and video shared by ChannelBV editor John Abdelnour over at his blog, Ten Shillings. In 2005, a few of us spent a weekend with the Ski Joring competitors in Leadville. The resulting mini-documentary was well received at last years Independence Film Festival in Buena Vista, Colorado. We had fun making it and hope that it captures the soul of the sport if not the action. Click this link to view the documentary on google video.
