Yesterday at the Chaffee County courthouse focus groups who have worked over the past year to reshape the county zoning plan met and watched as Marjo Curgus of the Sonoran Institute and her team presented a “stab in the dark” of a plan that was based on the information gathered from previous meetings. It provided a tangible goal that all of the groups (like water resources, ranching, historical, development, and sustainable growth) could look towards and hopefully move towards. It also made the fact clear that even though there are now many aspects of the plan that have achieved consensus among the participants, many of the details of the plan still need to be thoroughly hashed out before any movement will happen.

These meetings will determine the look and feel of our county for years to come. The commissioners will soon draft a new zoning plan and the roundtable plays an integral role in their decision.

Bob Christiansen, Chaffee County Administrator, recently wrote an article giving the backstory of how the current rezoning process came into being. This week, Keith Baker of the Trailhead posted a piece sharing his view of smart growth in the county.
