Here’s an update on our neighbors to the north.

According to an April 2 article by Solomon Banda of the Associated Press, Leadville’s mining tunnel issue is being rather persistent. “[Lake County Commissioner Mike] Hickman sent a letter to Gov. Bill Ritter Tuesday asking that the state spend $3.5 million to drill a well and pump water out of the Canterbury Tunnel, which once provided drinking water to Leadville.”

Another recent development to this story is that Leadville Commissioner, Ken Olsen, is attempting to charge the EPA $20,000 to run pipe across his property.

This piece in the Denver Westword comments on the political nature of the issue and the over-hype so common in today’s news coverage. “…a recent announcement about the dangers of toxic water collected in a closed mine tunnel near Leadville was a carefully orchestrated affair conducted by Lake County commissioners and Castle Rock Senator Tom Wiens.”

As in many issues like this, it is can be difficult to discern what coverage is based on fact and what is based on emotion. This lighter commentary by Leadville local Peter Frykholm in the Denver Post instead focuses on the good happening in his town by comparing the rise in tunnel water to the rise of good in Leadville.
