WaterApparently not, according to the Pueblo Chieftain’s Chris Woodka in his April 2 article, “Pipeline plan goes easy on Upper Ark“.

“Two alternatives of SDS - although not the preferred alternative from Pueblo Dam - would rehabilitate the Granite diversion for the Homestake Project on the Arkansas River north of Buena Vista, which now is only a backup for the Otero Pipeline that connects with Twin Lakes.

The Southern Delivery System, a water project to serve Colorado Springs and Fountain with water up to the year 2046, has been in the works for about 5 years now. The SDS project has undergone a series of open houses to ask for public input on their recently released Draft Environmental Impact Statement.

If you are not familiar with the SDS, check out this article, once again by Chris Woodka of the Pueblo Chieftain, “Recipe for a pipeline” to get a brief overview of all of the options for the project.

And from the same series, Mr. Woodka mentions the concerns raised by Buena Vistans in the April 1 meeting at the Community Center:

“At Buena Vista on Tuesday, residents were concerned that improving diversions along the river could make it possible to take more water out of the river, depleting flows. Reclamation says SDS is unlikely to do this, but many of the 17 people who attended the open house said the river has become important for recreation as well as the traditional ranching economy of Chaffee County.” - Seeing the river through different eyes
