“Hunger is on the rise along with food prices. In a fascinating turn of economic events mixed with environmental issues like water pollution and heavy storms, food prices have spiraled out of control with the world’s poorest countries suffering the most. If you want a quick recap of how this happened, this Washington Post article by Anthony Faiola does a great job of summing up the crisis. You really should take a look through the slideshow of photos on the same page. One that struck me the most is the one of the sign at a Costco in California that is limiting the amount of rice that people can buy. The cost of food is certainly beginning to effect us in the United States.

Another contributing factor is the current craze over ethanol. Oregon seems to be more lukewarm about it than before, realizing that “its production — in growing and transporting corn, and in the fuel burned to distill it — uses more energy than it saves.” according to Gail Kinsey Hill of the Oregonian. Local Dustin Urban delves deeply into the topic in his High Country News Article, A Bad Idea Hits the Gas Pumps.”
