Thanks to one of our CBV readers for the heads up on this interesting story from Marketplace entitled, Wal-Mart Looks Local to Save On Shipping. No, it doesn’t mean that our favorite box store will be knocking on the door of our local CSA. Rather, it is an economic decision derived from rising fuel costs.
“Local to Wal-Mart means it’s produced in a state and it could be produced on a mega-farm. In other words, he says, in the eyes of Wal-Mart, that factory farm down the road is just as local as the family-owned vegetable patch.” says Iowa State agricultural economist Bruce Babcock in an interview.
