Randy Udall, former director of the Community Office for Resource Efficiency (CORE)in western Colorado, and one of the nation’s leading activists in promoting energy sustainability will be the opening speaker at the “Sustainability Showcase & Celebration” in Buena Vista on September 27.
During Udall’s thirteen year tenure, CORE’s partnerships with individuals, governments, and utilities have led to some remarkable accomplishments, including Colorado’s first solar energy incentive program, the world’s first Renewable Energy Mitigation Program which has raised $6 million, the world’s stiffest carbon tax, and some of the most progressive green power purchasing programs in the country. Udall wrote his first article on climate change in 1987. A solar retrofit of his home in Carbondale, Colorado will keep 300,000 pounds of carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere during the next 20 years. Udall is also co-founder of the Association for the Study of Peak Oil-USA, and speaks widely on why “energy is an IQ test Americans tend to fail.”
The Sustainability Showcase & Celebration is being organized by Colorado Mountain College and will focus on three main topics: Renewable Energy, Local Food Production and Sustainable Economic Development.
Speakers will make presentations on these topics over the full-day event, scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 27 at the Orpheum Theatre and other nearby locations.
The “Showcase” refers to the trade show which will be set up around the perimeter of the interior of the Orpheum Theatre starting Saturday morning, for businesses, organizations or individuals wishing to display or promote their “green” products or services. Booth spaces will be available for $50.00.
Other highlights of the day include, a mini “Farmer’s Market,” offering locally-produced foods and other products, music and entertainment.
Cost for the event, which, in addition to the opportunity to attend presentations by experts in their fields, includes free entrance to the Showcase and an imprinted reusable shopping bag is $10.00.
