As I write, I am listening to the new Peter Gabriel (and friends) album, Big Blue Ball, as recommended by ChannelBV reader, Keith B.

I love the interactions you have with others on Main Street. We were riding our bikes back home having just enjoyed a cup of coffee with some friends and found Keith on his bike as well. For us Main St. is all about running into friends, setting aside a few moments to chat, then continuing on, half expecting to have more similar encounters along the way to your destination.

As we said our farewells and started to ride away, Keith asked if we like world music. We said definitely and he then proceeded to make us promise to download this newest collaborative project from one of our favorite artists of the past, Peter Gabriel.

Apparently, all of the recordings took place between 1991 and 1995, but it has taken this long to work out the sound engineering and get the album organized.

One week in the middle of summer this craziness exploded in our Real World Studios. We had this week of invited guests, people from all around the world, fed by music and a 24 hour café. It was a giant playpen, a bring your own studio party. There’d be a studio set up on the lawn, in the garage, in someone’s bedroom as well as the seven rooms we had available. We were curators of sorts of all this living mass. We had poets and songwriters there, people would come in and scribble things down, they’d hook up in the café. It was like a dating agency, then they’d disappear into the darkness and make noises – and we’d be there to record it.” says Peter on the Big Blue Ball website.

Liane Hansen from NPR’s Weekend Edition Sunday interviewed Peter Gabriel and co-producers Karl Wallinger and Stephen Hague about their collaborative album, recently released by the label, Real World Records. They have some very interesting insights about the creation and production of this album.

In looking around a bit, I also stumbled on the Real World Remixes website where there are many artists remixing the songs on Big Blue Ball. Click “Top Twenty” or “Hot Picks” to hear some energetic remixes.

So thanks Keith for a great pick. And thanks Peter for finally releasing this incredible album.
