Bicyclists know it. Electric car drivers know it, and now thanks to DBC Salida Biodiesel I know it. It’s the warm and fuzzy feeling you get when you travel from point A to point B without consuming a single drop of fossil fuel. But more than just a warm and fuzzy feeling, there’s a deeper sense of planet-citizenship—knowing that you’re taking a huge step in not participating in what President Bush described in his 2006 State of the Union address as “America’s addiction to oil”.
Thanks to the newly formed membership cooperative, DBC Salida Biodiesel, diesel car owners once again have a local source for certified quality Biodiesel here in the Arkansas Valley. Spearheaded by the volunteer efforts of Jeff Coombes, a branch of Denver Biodiesel Cooperative, LLC (DBC) has been established in Salida on the Silver Street site of Artful Moving and Storage in Smeltertown (adjacent to the brick smokestack).
As a non-profit coop, DBC Salida is a member-owned organization “committed to increasing public access to Biodiesel fuel and of the benefits of Recycled Vegetable Oil biofuels (RVO)”. As stated in their literature, “We aim to provide the most ecologically sound fuel available at or below market prices for Biodiesel and petroleum diesel”.
The coop provides Biodiesel (“B100”) fuel that meets or exceeds ASTM D6751 at a discounted rate not available to the public.
Benefits of membership include local fill-ups at the Sliver Street facility; on-site delivery in 55-gallon drums and 275 or 330 gallon Intermediate Bulk Containers, special lube oils, filters and other accessories, classes, and workshops at reduced prices, discounts on RVO feedstock, Biodiesel winterization and conversion services.
There are five levels of membership offered in the coop ranging from $5.00 which will allow one-week access to the products to $200 which will provide agricultural and industrial consumers a one-year membership with a minimum requirement to purchase at 3,000 gallons.
For individual contributing members like most of us, memberships are available for $100/year. However, one can purchase a one-year membership at 50% of the cost ($50) by committing to provide twelve, 4-hour volunteer work shifts throughout the year. The nature of the work can range from staffing the distribution center to providing in-kind services. Contributions can vary depending on ability and schedule.
The address for the distribution center is Artful Moving and Storage, 7900 Silver Street (off CR 150, SW of the big smokestack). Summer hours are Saturdays and Sundays from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.. For more information contact Jeff Coombe, manager, 720-934-8130 (jeff@paradigmbiogas.com). Information is also available at www.denverbiodiesel.com.
And remember to stop by their booth at the upcoming Sustainability Showcase in Buena Vista on September 27th.
