As the summer travel season reaches it’s peak, I was saddened to read about the loss a great monument in Arches National Park.  Wall Arch was a much photographed icon of Utah’s famed park.  From the Associated Press

“Paul Henderson, the park’s chief of interpretation, said Wall Arch collapsed sometime late Monday or early Tuesday (editors note - August 4th or 5th). Henderson said the arch was claimed by forces that will eventually destroy others in the park: gravity and erosion. “They all let go after a while,” he said Friday.”

Having traveled in and marveled at Arches National and all of the spectacular sights therein during the past few years, I’m glad that President Hoover agreed with the proponents that this was a place worth protecting.  Natural wonders like Arches exist in our community as well embodied obviously in the mountains and the river.

Less obvious but no less worth protecting is the proposed Browns Canyon Wilderness Area.  I think that it’s important to remember that just because (or perhaps especially because) we don’t drive by something everyday doesn’t mean that it’s any less important that we speak up to voice our support of it’s protection.  There was a good turn out for Ken Salazaar’s town hall meeting on the subject and I would encourage folks to keep talking about this issue.  The die has yet to be cast one way or another.  And though it seems that Senator Salazaar is leaning towards the creation of the wilderness area, hearing one more voice of support can always help to make the right path clear.

Big thanks to Rick Rack Attack for the very current photos.
