Michael Callahan will address the topic of Photovoltaic Solar Energy (the field of technology and research related to the application of solar cells for energy by converting sunlight directly into electricity) in Peru and the U.S. on Saturday, September 27 at the Orpheum Theatre in Buena Vista at the Sustainability Showcase & Celebration. He earned a BS degree in Civil Engineering from North Carolina State University and studied abroad in Venezuela and in Spain. His first career position was with ExxonMobil in Niger, Angola, Republic of Congo, Equatorial Guinea and Nigeria over a period of four years.

After three months with the National Outdoor Leadership School, he managed the construction of the first silver certified Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) recreation center in Boulder CO. He is a professional engineer and an accredited LEED professional.

He is currently starting a clean technology distribution company in Peru (PowerMundo) while obtaining a Master’s degree in Global Social and Sustainable Enterprise at Colorado State University. While at Colorado State he received the Jim Epstein Fellowship, an Aspen Institute Environmental Forum Fellowship, and a Colorado State University International Presidential Fellowship. Additionally his start-up company received a grant from the Colorado State University Clean Energy Super Cluster.

Two other confirmed speakers are Randy Udall, “one of the nations’ leading activist in promoting energy sustainability,” and Quint Redmond, “an expert in the utilization of the land use concept, “Agriburbia,” which integrates food production as an integral element in the community design, social network and financial viability of the neighborhood.”

The Sustainability Showcase & Celebration is being organized by Colorado Mountain College and will focus on three main topics: Renewable Energy, Local Food Production and Sustainable Economic Development.

Speakers will make presentations on these topics over the full-day event, scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 27 at the Orpheum Theatre and other nearby locations. A panel of experts will address the topic: Restoring a Local Food Economy.”

The “Showcase” refers to the trade show which will be set up both inside and outside of the Orpheum Theatre starting Saturday morning, for businesses, organizations or individuals wishing to display or promote their “green” products or services. Booth spaces will be available for $50.00.

Other highlights of the day include, a mini “Farmer’s Market,” offering locally-produced foods and other products, a morning coffee break hosted by Buena Vista Roastery, and afternoon wine and cheese break hosted by Mountain Spirit Winery and Jumpin’ Goat Dairy, and “Community Mixer” from 6 – 9 PM featuring local musical talent.

Cost for the event, which includes all presentations and panel discussions, free entrance to the Showcase and Community Mixer is $10.00 at the door.
