Alex T writes, “Just back from the 18th annual Crestone Energy fair and green home tour has me excited for Buena Vista’s Sustainability Showcase scheduled for the 27th of September. The Crestone Fair was full of the color and character that Colorado residents have come to expect from Crestonians. The home tour that we attended showcased a newer style of strawbale building with tensioned post and beam contruction - the bales were placed under the beams between the posts and and the beams were wrapped with compression straps, tensioned down onto the bales, compressing them to encourage cohesion and longevity of their R40+ insulation value. The house illustrated in the picture is an example of a cordwood structure using locally sourced beetle kill trees, mortar and decorative glass as the filler between radial post and beam construction. This is a truly unique and beautiful house (More photos to come) All in all a fascinating tour lead by knowlegable and approachable guides. A big thank you to the people who opened their homes and their heads to educate us about their alternative building methods.
