If you are a junior in high school, you could be one of the lucky students from Sangre De Cristo Electric Association’s (SDCEA) service territory to win the chance to represent SDCEA in the nation’s capital. The winner(s) will join other students from around the state and country for an exciting week of learning and exploring Washington, D.C., June 11 – 18, 2009. The tour is arranged through Colorado Rural Electric Association, the statewide organization representing all 22 of Colorado’s rural electric cooperatives.
If you know a high school junior who would like to experience Washington, D.C. as a representative of SDCEA please alert them to pick up an application packet from their high school guidance counselor in November, or download it from our website at www.myelectric.coop. The deadline for entering is December 19, 2008. To enter a student must currently be a junior in high school and have a parent or guardian who is a member of SDCEA. The application must be filled out and returned with an essay of 300 – 500 words on one of the topics outlined in the packet.
The trip is all-expenses-paid and prior to their departure for Washington, the student delegation from Colorado meets in Denver for a day of learning about the electric industry at the statewide level. Visits to Tri-State Generation and Transmission headquarters, the wholesale supplier for SDCEA, the state capitol and Colorado Rural Electric Association’s headquarters fill up most of the day and allow the students time to get to know their travel companions. Adult chaperones accompany the students and facilitate the activities during the week long adventure.
