Walking through a bookstore last month, a cover caught my eye, The Transition Handbook - From Oil Dependency to Local Resilience by Rob Hopkins. That was my first introduction to the concept of “transition towns” or towns that are working now to reduce their need for oil and build infrastructure that supports a durable community. I appreciate the ChannelBV reader that turned us on to their website: www.transitiontowns.org

“A Transition Initiative is a community working together to look Peak Oil and Climate Change squarely in the eye and address this BIG question: ‘for all those aspects of life that this community needs in order to sustain itself and thrive, how do we significantly increase resilience (to mitigate the effects of Peak Oil) and drastically reduce carbon emissions (to mitigate the effects of Climate Change)?’ www.transitiontowns.org

Amongst the large quantity of helpful material on the site, one page speaks of the 12 key steps to begin the transition. Of the 12, the second is awareness raising. Listed there are a few movies to get the juices flowing. If you have 52 minutes, I highly suggest taking a look at one of the movies they suggest: End of Suburbia.

Since Buena Vista is rather dependent on oil at this point, should we consider thinking through alternatives now, before we are in a state of reaction rather than response? What is our plan to be able to “sustain ourselves and thrive?”

Here is your next 52 minutes:
